HERDWICK SHEEP

  • Native to: The Herdwick is a domestic breed of hill Sheep native to central and western parts of the Lake District in the UK.
  • Diet: Herdwicks are Herbivores, meaning that their diet consists of grass and hay.
  • Lifespan:
  • IUCN Status: Domesticated
  • Fun Fact: The name ‘Herdwick’ means sheep pasture and there is evidence of the breed dating back as early as the 12th century.  Beatrix Potter was involved in breeding and keeping Herdwicks and upon her death in 1963, she left her land to the National Trust to continue to graze Herdwicks on.

 

CASTLEMILK SHEEP

  • Native to: The Castlemilk Moorit Sheep is a domestic breed from Scotland.
  • Diet: Herdwicks are Herbivores, meaning that their diet consists of grass and hay.
  • Lifespan:
  • IUCN Status: Domesticated. However, it is listed ‘vulnerable’ by the British Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
  • Fun Facts: The breed was established by the Buchanan-Jardine family on their Castlemilk estate in Dumfriessire more than a century ago, hence the name ‘Castlemilk’. The Lowland Scots word ‘moorit’ refers to the light tan or reddish-brown color of their fleeces.
