Meet Twiglet – Our Tiny Dik-Dik Antelope at All Things Wild.
There’s always something new to discover at All Things Wild, and we’re delighted to introduce one of our smallest residents—Twiglet, our female Dik-Dik antelope. Having arrived from Wild Discovery Zoo near Preston, Twiglet has quickly become a favourite with both visitors and our animal team. Measuring just over 35 centimetres at the shoulder, she may be tiny, but she’s certainly full of character.

What Is a Dik-Dik?
Dik-Diks are one of the smallest species of antelope in the world and are native to the grasslands and scrublands of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.
Fully grown adults usually stand between 30 and 40 centimetres tall, making them remarkably small when compared with larger antelope species such as the Common Eland, which can reach an impressive 1.6 metres in height.
Despite their size, Dik-Diks are perfectly adapted to life in the wild. Their large eyes help them stay alert to predators, while their long, flexible nose—known as a prehensile proboscis—helps cool their body and gives them their distinctive appearance. Many visitors even say it reminds them of a tiny elephant’s trunk!
Supporting Conservation Through Breeding Programmes
Twiglet’s arrival is about much more than welcoming a new animal to the park. She is part of an internationally coordinated breeding programme designed to help maintain healthy populations of Dik-Diks in conservation collections across Europe. These programmes play an important role in safeguarding species for the future and help ensure healthy genetic diversity.
Although Dik-Diks are not currently classified as endangered, some wild populations are facing increasing pressure from habitat loss, human development and illegal poaching. Supporting responsible breeding programmes allows zoos like All Things Wild to contribute towards the long-term conservation of these incredible animals.
We also hope to welcome a male companion in the future as part of this ongoing conservation effort.
A Shy but Fascinating Species
Unlike some of our larger and more confident residents, Dik-Diks are naturally shy and cautious animals.
In the wild, they rely on dense vegetation for protection and are incredibly alert to any signs of danger. Their small size and quick movements help them escape predators, while their excellent hearing allows them to react instantly to unusual sounds.
Taking a little extra time to observe Twiglet during your visit can be incredibly rewarding, as you’ll often spot her exploring her habitat or quietly browsing for food.
